The discovery of penicillin one of the greatest breakthroughs in medicine. After returning from vacation, Alexander Fleming lifted the lids from some old Petri dishes and saw that the bacteria he had produced were being destroyed by a mold that he later identified as penicillin. He referred to penicillin as an "antibiotic" in his explanation. Nevertheless, Fleming lacked both the financial means and the physical resources necessary to go on with his study.
