Trimethylaminuria (TMAU) is a benign genetic disorder characterized by an excretion of trimethylamine (fishy smelling compound) in body excretions (urine, saliva, breath, sweat) because of a lack in FMO3 enzymes responsible for the N-oxydation of trimethylamine. The condition, known also as the fish odor syndrome, affects more women than men, and is associated with severe psychological sequelae ranging from social isolation to suicide.
